Sediments of Memory

Ali Shawwa’s diverse artistic practice encompasses painting, sculpture, and 3D printing, and reflect his deep connection to his Middle Eastern heritage. His practice channels references to Bedouin traditions, Islamic architecture, and iconic figures from Arab pop culture.

The bodies of work showcase Shawwa’s approach to memory, presenting a non-linear narrative that reimagines the past through a sedimentary lens. The artist’s use of layers features prominently: each element builds upon the next to create a labyrinth of stories. From contemporary portraits of Arab pop legends to scenes of gossipers infused with cultural nuances, Shawwa’s works invite viewers to explore the intricate relationships between memory, tradition, and the region’s unique identity.
