Characterized by its interplay of texture, contrasting colors and reflective metallic elements, Shawwa’s artwork infuses them together in search of balance and a relationship between the tangible and the imagined.
The varied practice mediums of Ali Shawwa range from painting to sculpting and 3D printing. His works are multi-layered and consistently engage with the natural world, a vital component of Shawwa’s process.
Shawwa’s vocabulary of dynamic layers make up the visual language in his artwork. Derived from nature, memory and the subconscious, he creates an alternative living world of figurative portraits, creatures, and wild flora and fauna – and where the abstract is superimposed and becomes a prominent expressive motif throughout his work.
The Kuwaiti artist was born in 1976. With a background in Environmental Design, Ali Shawwa began developing his art portfolio since the age of 15, and throughout the years he has remained committed to his artistic path. Though largely self taught, Shawwa has studied with mentors, including renowned Iraqi architect and artist Maath Alousi – a respected pillar in modern Regionalist Architecture - and Cypriot master potter Valentinos Charalambous.
Shawwa has been exhibited in galleries and art auctions in London and Dubai, acquired internationally by art enthusiasts and private collectors. He currently lives in Dubai.
